Lesotho Opens Its Doors: Visa-Free Travel For All EU Nationals

In a significant step toward promoting tourism and fostering foreign alliances, Lesotho has endorsed visa-free access for nationals of all European Union member states. The statement was made during the Lesotho-EU Partnership Dialogue, held on 14 May 2025 in Maseru, the country’s capital.

The new guideline facilitates travel for Europeans and boosts bilateral cooperation between Lesotho and the EU. Even though officials have not yet verified an actual beginning date, they account that enforcement is almost complete.

The New Era Of Travel Entry For Europeans

Prime Minister Sam Matekane announced that his cabinet has formally approved a visa exemption, making Lesotho more easily accessible to European tourists. The government also intends to enhance diplomatic relations, attract international investment, and foster cultural exchange through this initiative.

Visa-Free Access Already Set For Many

Although this visa exclusion is new, several European and Western nations have already benefited from visa-free access to Lesotho for short visits. Present visa-excluded countries comprise of:

  • Europe: United Kingdom, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Sweden, Cyprus, Spain, Czech Republic, Portugal, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Netherlands, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, Iceland.
  • Other nations include Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States.

These travelers are permitted to remain in Lesotho for 2 weeks without a visa.

Enforcement Information Coming Soon

While the visa exclusion has been endorsed, actual enforcement processes are still pending. Prime Minister Matekane assured attendees at the dialogue that the formalities are in the final phases.

Travelers from the EU are advised to check official government channels and contact Lesotho’s diplomatic missions for the latest updates before planning their visit.

Lesotho E-Visa System Stays On Hold

The Lesotho authority halted its e-Visa portal, introduced in 2017 to facilitate online visa requests, due to safety concerns. The system permitted travelers from more than 160 nations to apply for different visa classifications, including business, tourist, study, and diplomatic, online.

In April 2024, the platform will be offline. Currently, travelers are required to either:

  • Make an application through Lesotho diplomatic missions
  • Email completed visa applications to visa-applications.immigrations@gov.ls at least 5 days before arrival.

Why This Is Important For Travelers

Lesotho, a scenic, high-altitude kingdom surrounded by South Africa, is a treasure trove of unique geography, rich culture, and adventure tourism prospects. Its hiking trails and off-the-beaten-path charm make it an exciting destination for EU travelers.

By waiving visa conditions for EU nationals, Lesotho is positioning itself as a more welcoming and accessible destination for foreign tourists.

Planning A Trip To Lesotho

If you are a European traveler deliberating a travel to Lesotho, below is what you are required to have in mind:

  • Check official sources for visa exclusion rollout dates
  • Review flight connectivity through South Africa, as Lesotho is landlocked
  • Prepare for travel insurance and any necessary health documents.
  • Explore beautiful sites such as Sani Pass, Thaba Bosiu, and Sehlabathebe National Park.

In conclusion, Lesotho’s decision to provide visa-free access to EU nationals marks a promising step towards increased global connectivity and tourism recovery. As enforcement information is finalized, European travelers can look forward to easier access to one of Africa’s most scenic and culturally rich destinations.
